The Road Trip

Addie, Debbie and Rodney are on their way to their best friend’s Cherry wedding. They left the house early to avoid the traffic and to be there on time. But this road trip does not go to plan. They are just on their way when they have their first accident. Someone crashed into their car. When they get out they see it is Marcus and Dylan, who are also on their way to the wedding. Dylan used to be Addie’s boyfriend but they broke up a year ago after something terrible happened. Marcus and Dylan’s car can’t drive any further, so they get in the mini and continue their trip. But they have no idea what will happen on this trip because there is still a lot of to discuss and of course a lot of crazy things are happening on their road trip.

Review

I’ve read two other books by Beth O’leary: The Flatshare and The Switch. Both were great books, my favourite one is definitely the flatshare. That story/book was super cute. This book is about a road trip, exactly what you would expect when you read the title. And there are some flashbacks too.

I am going, to be honest, and say it took me forever to finish this book. I think I started reading this one two weeks ago and sometimes I read books and I get very excited to go home after work and read more. But this time not so much. I love the other books by Beth but this was not as good as the other books in my opinion. I think it is mostly because I thought Addie and Dylan were pretty boring. Or maybe I needed more tension between the two. Marcus’ story was interesting enough for me, to keep on reading and eventually finish this book. But if Marcus was not a character and the whole Rodney situation did not happen, I would not have finished this book. But I guess that happens sometimes. Sometimes the book is good, but you don’t relate to the characters. Just like in real life, you just can’t like everyone.

That was the reason why I did not like this book that much, now let’s talk about the things I liked. I liked the sudden plot twist and the whole situation with Rodney. He was basically a stranger to everyone else (Marcus, Addie, Debbie and Dylan) in the car. They did not even know how he knew Cherry, the wedding they were going to.
I also liked the flashbacks, this way could find out what happened between Addie and Dylan and why they broke up. I could feel they were definitely in love. But at that moment a lot of things were going on. I think that was never an ideal situation for any relationship. I did see the thing with Marcus coming though, that was pretty obvious.

But reading one book I did not like, does not mean I will never read a book by Beth again. I still liked the other two books. Another book called ‘No Show’ is coming out this year. I will definitely try and read that one. And I can only hope I will like it as much as I liked the Flatshare.

Normally my reviews are way longer than this, but there is not much I still want to mention about this book. I think (for me) it was just an average book that was good, just good. Nothing more or nothing less.

I liked this book, but it will not a book I will remember at the end of the year. I’ve already read way more interesting and cuter lovestories. Or maybe my expectations were just too high because when this book came out everyone was talking about it. Anyway, I am going to wait until the next book of Beth comes out in April and read it. Hopefully I will like that book better.
