Sad movies to watch when you need a good cry

Sometimes when I am stressed, there is one thing that helps me a lot and that is crying. Somehow crying feels good sometimes. It feels so good to let it all out. I am 100% sure I am not the only one who does this. One way to start crying is to watch sad movies. Most of the time I prefer to watch happy and romantic movies. But sometimes when I feel I need it, I like to watch a sad movie too. I know that I am not the only one who likes to watch sad movies when I need a good cry. But what movie is sad enough to make you cry? These are 10 sad movies to watch when you need a good cry.

Sad movies to watch when you need a good cry

1. A miracle from heaven
Not all movies that make you cry are super sad and this is one of them. I still really wanted to add this to the list because it made me cry so hard. And this movie has made an impression apparently, because I still think about this movie sometimes. It is about a normal family, with three daughters. One of the daughters gets sick and nobody knows what is going on. Eventually, they get a diagnosis but that is when the whole rollercoaster starts. I won’t spoil the ending because it was so good and beautiful. And I still think about this movie a lot, because it is based on a true story.

2. Brain on fire
Another movie that always makes me cry is Brain on Fire. Again, this is another movie based on a true story. Most of the time those movies are the ones that will really make you cry. It is about a young woman who leads a normal life, but suddenly her life changes because she is getting sick. At first, she is just tired and dizzy but it gets worse and worse. She gets extremely angry without a reason. She even starts to see and hear things that are not there. Eventually, she is not able to do anything.

3. Marley & Me
If you are an animal lover, I do have the perfect cry movie for you. Marley & Me is about a family who gets a dog, but it is a pretty wild one, maybe even a bit crazy. But they love him a lot. He became a part of the family pretty fast. This does not sound very sad, but wait until you see the whole movie. The ending will make you cry so hard.

4. Five feet apart
A teenager with cystic fibrosis has to stay at the hospital for a while to try the new treatment. Her immune system is really bad so she can’t be around other people unless they wear protections clothes and a face mask. But she also has to stay away from other patients with the same disease. At the hospital, she makes a new friend who also has cystic fibrosis. But they have to be 6 feet apart at all times, but that gets harder when they fall in love. But getting too close can mean, that someone gets sick and maybe dies.

5. Me before you
This is definitely a classic. A woman needs a new job and she finds one, but it is not an easy one. She has to take care of a man who is completely paralyzed and needs help 24/7. He is annoying and he does not want the help from her. But she never gives up and finds a way to make his life a little better. They are getting closer and fall in love. But he turns her life upside down when he shares a secret with her. Now she is trying to do her best to change his mind because she can’t imagine a life without him anymore.

6. The Choice
Of course, I had to add a Nicholas Sparks story to this list. A woman (Gabby) moves into her new house next to the beach. The perfect place to study without any distractions was the idea. But then she meets her neighbour. He drives Gabby crazy, but at the same time she can’t stay away from here. Even though, she already has a boyfriend. But love grows stronger and they fall in love. But than something terrible happens and he has to make an extremely hard decision. Is he ready to make that decision? Can he live with that.

7. All the bright places
This needs a trigger warning. Yes it is super sad, but it is about suicide (thoughts). This movie is definitely not for everyone. I’ve read the book many years ago and I had no idea it was going to be this hard. Two teenagers who are struggling in life meet on the roof of their school. They save each others lives. They are trying to find the love for life again, so they won’t have to struggle anymore.

8. Hachi: A dog’s tale
This is the movie that is always on TV around Christmas time, but it does not feel good to watch this movie around the happy holidays. Because this movie is one of the saddests movies ever, but at the same time it was such a beautiful movie too. I kept on crying long after the movie ended. So this is the perfect movie to watch when you need a good cry. A man takes the same train every day and a dog follows him and the dog decided that this man is his new boss. The man however wasn’t sure if he wanted a dog. But eventually they form a special bond, which made the movie so sad and beautiful.

9. Titanic
If you have the time, I would recommend watching the Titanic. The movie is super long, but I love the story of the Titanic. Once I went to a Titanic exhibition and it was a pretty cool one. I think we all know the story, but in case you don’t. It is about a young poor wins who wins a ticket for the Titanic with gambling and he thinks is the luckiest guy on earth. Especially when he meets Rose, the daughter of a rich man. They fall in love pretty quick. But then the Titanic hits an iceberg and it starts to sink. They don’t have enough boats for everyone, so not everyone will survive.

10. The Fault in Our Stars
A love story between two teenagers with cancer. She has her stuff together and he does not care a damn about things, at least he pretends he does not care. They spend a lot of time together since they moment they meet at a support group meeting. They both still have things they want to do, Hazel still wants to meet her favourite author in Amsterdam. A trip to Amsterdam sounds fun, but they are still fighting cancer.

A little fun fact about ‘The fault in our stars’: At one moment they sit on a bench in Amsterdam and after that movie came out, people stole the bench. They tried to replace it, but another person tried to steal it too. So they never replaced the bench again.

Which one is your favourite sad movie?
