Do you drink alcohol? Or maybe you’ve stopped drinking alcohol a while ago. Or maybe you never started drinking. And it is okay if you don’t drink alcohol. Drinking alcohol is not the norm and it should never be.
It is okay if you don’t drink alcohol
It started with a new year’s resolution
I stopped drinking alcohol at the age of 23 or 24, I believe. It started as a joke basically. It was the first day of the new year and a lot of people make new year resolutions. And I said to my friends and myself: I am going to find out how long I could ‘live’ without drinking alcohol. I was still a student and it was very rare when a student didn’t drink alcohol. Students go out every single night and now I wasn’t one of them.
When people make new year resolutions, they say something like: I will never drink alcohol again. I didn’t use those words. I only said that I wanted to find out how long I can live without alcohol. Funny enough, I’ve stopped drinking alcohol at that moment. Maybe this is a great strategy to achieve your new year’s resolutions.
Why I stopped drinking
Okay, one of the reasons why I stopped was because I was burned out (or maybe I was bored out). And I was feeling anxious and at that time I got panic attacks every single day. So yes, it was a great moment for me to stop. I had a good reason. I wanted to feel great again.
And yes, the panic attacks have stopped. But I don’t think that stop drinking alcohol was the solution. It was more about stress.
I think if you also want to stop drinking alcohol, it can be great if you find a reason why you are stopping. And remind yourself of it when you want to buy a bottle of wine.
Life without alcohol
Anyway, it is been 6 years since the moment I stopped drinking alcohol and I honestly think I will never drink it again. The best thing is that I don’t feel hungover on Sundays anymore. I am even wondering why I started drinking alcohol in the first place. Probably because it was something every teenager was looking forward too. Back in the day, 16 years old could drink alcohol (not anymore). So yes, for 6/7 years I was drinking alcohol on weekends. And the next day I was feeling hungover. And now when I look back, I feel like I was wasting time. I wasted my Sundays because I was too tired to do anything.
But now I wake up on Sundays at 8 and full of energy. I like this version of myself better. Full of energy, more productive, and not wasting time and money on drinking alcohol.
Yes, some people think that drinking alcohol is a normal thing. But honestly, it is still a drug. And it can do a lot of harm to your body. It is your own decision if you want to stop. You are still a cool person when you drink coca-cola instead of wine. And you win because the next day they (probably) will feel terrible and you feel great.
