About ‘The Hate U give’

This movie is based on a book written by Angie Thomas. It is about Starr, who basically lives two different lives: the poor, mostly black neighbourhood where she lives and her white rich school. On a weekend’s night, she leaves a party in a hurry with her friend Khalil because of gunshots at the party.
Not much later her friend Khalil get shot by the policeman in front of Starr.

One side of the community wants her to be silent, that is the Kings Lord. He is the boss in their neighbourhood. Other people are saying that she should tell everyone what really happened. That this (racism) should stop NOW.

Damn, I think I just cried for 2 hours. I’ve had heard so many stories about this book and I still haven’t read it yet, but I really wanted to see the movie. And it took a while before it came out here in the Netherlands. Because I know the rest of this world saw this movie in 2018.

I am so happy that Angie Thomas wrote about this topic. (I still have to read the book though). I grow up in a neighbourhood with only white people and I still live there. And of course, you hear about this problem on tv every now and then. But I had no idea what is like to live like that. I should be happy that I grew up and live in a peaceful neighbourhood.

I am happy for Starr and one other friend from school still supported her and wanted to help her. I think that is true friendship. Starr developed from a girl who didn’t snitch to a girl who used her voice and to say what she wanted to say. I think that is what Starr makes her a role model. In what kind of circumstances you are in, you should say what you think. Use your voice.

I also love how close her family are. They are willing to die for each other.

The only thing was the ending. So because Starr said enough is enough, there was suddenly peace and everything was fine and cool? We all know that isn’t the reality. And I don’t know how the book ends but I feel like they just wanted to have a happy end.

Have you read the book or seen the movie?
