It is the last day of 2019. We still have a few hours left and we are in 2020. The last day of the year always feels special. And in the last couple of days of the year we have a couple of things we do every year, my end of the year traditions. I grew up doing these things and I still do them.
My end of the year traditions
I am from Groningen, the Netherlands. If you are also from this area you probably know what this is. These thin waffels are called kniepertjes, see photo. And they are super sweet but also very delicious. We always make them at the end of the year. That is the tradition where I live and your whole neighborhood smells like cookies.
This is harder to explain. But every year we also make oliebollen, see photo. I think you can compare it with round donuts, but it tastes different. And you don’t want to eat too much of these because it contains a lot of fat, just like donuts. If you go to the Netherlands in December, try this
Snacks and drinks
On the last day we don’t really eat full meals. We just make 1001 snacks (with or without grill) and we can get something if we are hungry. And on the first day of the new year, we eat all of the leftovers. I really like this because it is different than your normal routine. Everyone is just relaxed and you can eat whatever you want. And in the evening I get my alcoholfree drinks and the party is complete.
Watch the fireworks
I like to watch firework, except for those selfmade bombs. I will never get why people make those things. But after midnight I go to my bedroom and watch the fireworks from my window.
Normally, we would also watch something on tv, but this year is very boring. Nothing fun is coming on tv. We decided that we are going to watch Netflix all night long. And this morning I also bought two new books so I won’t get bored.
What are your plans on the last day of the year?
