About Alex Strangelove
Alex Truelove is a high school student and he is smart, has friends and a beautiful girlfriend. After 8 months dating they haven’t had sex together and Alex is a virgin. But they both (Claire and Alex) agree to get a hotel room and have sex together. When everyone is at a party, Alex meets Elliot. Elliot is gay and gets a crush on Alex. Alex does not think it is weird (since he thinks that he is straight) that a guy likes him and he starts to questioning himself. Is he into guys? Is he bisexual? Or is he gay? While he is struggling with this, his relationship with Claire gets worse.
I have to be honest. When I first saw the trailer I thought of ‘Simon vs Homosapien’s agenda.’ or ‘Love, Simon’ (the First title is a book, second is the movie adaption) I have not seen that movie yet, because it comes out on 14th this month here in the Netherlands. But there are both about coming out. It is good to see that they are making movies about coming out now.
I am not sure if this movie was a great success though. When Alex thinks he is bisexual, his friend Dell tells him that he just has a man-crush on a gay guy. And when he tells Claire about this, she asks him if it is not just a phase. They accept him, but when they said those lines, it didn’t feel like that. Like he told them a joke or something. I mean you can see him struggling with who he really is.
The movie was also weird at some points, for example, Dell is licking a frog (an exotic one). I mean, what was the point of that? But the parts of Alex and Elliot together were good. Those were my favourite parts of the movie.
I can’t compare it to Love, Simon yet, but I’ve heard good stories about that one. I was just hoping that Netflix would make a good movie about this topic. A little bit disappointed.
